During the 2021 NBA offseason, rumors were circulating that the Golden State Warriors were targeting a fourth superstar on the trade market. The summer of 2021 may have concluded with the Warriors not making any major roster move, but there remains a possibility for them to make a huge trade before the 2022 NBA trade deadline.
Having a plethora of interesting trade assets, the Warriors are currently in a strong position to land a superstar who is or will be available on the trading block.
One of the top trade targets for the Warriors this season is All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns of the Minnesota Timberwolves. In a recent article, Lee Tran of Fadeaway World talked about a hypothetical blockbuster trade idea that would allow the Warriors to acquire Towns from the Timberwolves before the 2022 NBA trade deadline.
In the proposed trade scenario, the Warriors would be sending a package that includes James Wiseman, Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, Jordan Poole, Kevon Looney, a 2022 first-round pick, and a 2022 second-round pick to the Timberwolves in exchange for Towns.
Giving up all those assets would undeniably be a tough decision for the Warriors, but it would be worth it if it means acquiring a player of Towns' caliber. Towns would be a massive upgrade over Wiseman at the starting center position. He would give the Warriors a very reliable scoring option under the basket, as well as a great rebounder, on-court facilitator, rim protector, and floor-spacer.
This season, Towns is once again posting incredible numbers, averaging 24.4 points, 9.0 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.1 blocks, and 1.1 steals while shooting 50.6 percent from the field and 41.8 percent from beyond the arc, per ESPN.
Even without engaging in a blockbuster trade, the Warriors are already playing like a legitimate title contender in the 2021-22 NBA season. However, the successful acquisition of Towns would undoubtedly make them a more formidable team in the Western Conference. Adding Towns to the Warriors' core of Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Andrew Wiggins, and Draymond Green would allow the Warriors to create another superteam.
If all those five starters mesh well on the court and manage to stay away from any major injury, it's hard to see a team that can beat the Warriors in a best-of-seven series.
The proposed blockbuster trade with the Warriors would be a no-brainer for the Timberwolves if Towns expresses his desire to leave. By sending Towns to Golden State, the Timberwolves would be acquiring enough assets that they need to undergo another rebuild. Wiseman, Kuminga, Moody, Poole, and Looney could join D'Angelo Russell and Anthony Edwards and form the core of the next title-contending team that the Timberwolves would try to build in the post-KAT era.
Aside from adding five young players, the Timberwolves would also get two future draft assets that would enable them to add more talented prospects to their roster.
