Former President Donald Trump has made it clear he intends to run for the White House once again in 2024, and if polls are any indication, he will win the Republican presidential primary easily.
But what about the general election? Research suggests that Trump would be a formidable candidate, as he remains by far the most popular Republican politician in the nation.
According to a top Democratic pollster, there's only one Democrat who could beat Donald Trump: current President Joe Biden.
Speaking with Politico, pollster John Anzalone said there is "no indication" Biden, 79, won't run for reelection.
According to Anzalone, this is good news for Democrats because Biden is the only person who could beat Trump in 2024.
Anzalone said, "a lot of us feel that if Trump runs, there’s no one else that could beat Trump [other] than Joe Biden."
"You go head-to-head, and Joe Biden’s always ahead of him. Not by a lot -- one or two points… Even at his lowest approval rating, he still beats Donald Trump," he explained.
Polling suggests Republicans have a good chance of sweeping the 2022 midterm elections and knocking Democrats out of power in both chambers of Congress.
According to Anzalone, Biden and his allies must pass at least a "skinny" Built Back Better bill "or whatever on health insurance costs, prescription drug costs" to be competitive.
But even if Democrats get obliterated in the midterms, the pollster says, that would not necessarily be a bad sign for Biden.
He noted that "Reagan went through this. Clinton went through this. Obama went through this. And they all got re-elected."
A recent CAPS-Harris poll suggests that Trump would be favored to win against both Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, who is widely seen as the next in line if the president decides against seeking reelection.
According to The Hill, 47 percent of respondents in the poll said they would vote for Trump, while 41 percent said they would support Biden.
Harris performed a little worse, with 38 percent of respondents in the survey saying they would back her over Trump.
Other polls suggest the same.
The latest Morning Consult survey showed that Trump's popularity in key battleground states has only increased since he left the White House.
The former president's popularity will also be tested in the upcoming midterms, being that he has endorsed a slew of MAGA candidates in Republican primary races across the nation.
