The Bible Miniseries Inserts A Bit Of Hollywood Drama Into Scriptures, But Message Remains Intact
The Bible miniseries takes a few creative liberties with the scriptures, but producer Mark Burnett says there’s a good reason.
After all, he’s trying to squeeze thousands of pages of text into 10 hours of screentime.
Burnett, the creative genius behind reality television hits like Survivor, The Apprentice, and The Voice, said he had a desire to make the bible come alive for viewers. The Bible miniseries is a labor of love for Burnett and his wife Roma Downey (who stars as Mary, mother of Jesus). Both were born in Europe and moved to the United States, and told CNN they were stunned that the bible was not taught in public schools.
The Bible miniseries, which premiered on Sunday on The History Channel, is Burnett’s attempt to convey the message to American viewers.
“It was time for an updating. Adding fresh visual life to a sacred text,” Burnett said.
That “fresh visual life” sometimes strays from the actual words of the Bible. For one, he compressed the stories of Adam and Eve and Noah’s arc into one narrative.
Later, when David picks up a stone to fight Goliath, he recites the famous 23rd Psalm, “Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil.” In the bible, King David writes the Psalm after he already slayed the giant Philistine.
Burnett said his intention was to take the countless stories of the bible and make it into a seamless story.
“The first decision was, it’s one story,” Burnett said. “It’s not a series of unconnected stories, it’s one grand narrative.”
“You could call it the meta narrative.”
Not everyone is on board with Burnett’s interpretation of the bible. New York Times television critic Neil Genzlinger said the stories in The Bible miniseries often fail to meet the mark and often substitute a little too much drama.
“The mini-series certainly seems unlikely to be much of a recruitment tool for Christianity, putting the emphasis on moments of suffering rather than messages of joy, and not just when it comes time for the Crucifixion. In this heavy-handed treatment, having Jesus born in a manger is not enough; the arrival also has to occur during what looks like a typhoon. Because why have a moderate amount of hardship when you can have an excess of it?”
Still, Burnett said he’s counting on The Bible miniseries having a massive impact. He told CNN that within 25 years, he thinks more people will have seen the miniseries than all of his ratings-topping reality shows combined.

I love it tongiht! Cant wait for next week..

I was so disappointed in this first segment. It was so overacted and corny. There have been many movies done based on Bible stories in the past that were so much more believable. I hope it improves.

I thought it was well done. The only thing that bothered me a bit was Abraham's $300 haircut! There are so many people trying very hard to get back to God that I believe this miniseries is a great start for them, including me.

A typhoon? Why not a tsuami? Up until the moment I read this article, I thought Downey was a bit more intelligent. The fact that she and her husband were stunned that the Bible was not taught in public schools indicates how limited they are. People, don't judge a book by its movie.

have you considered reading the bible for the real truth about the bible. or that God is calling you to Him. pray and ask for His guidance and truth.

Enjoyed!

It was great

I tried to watch this last night but I couldn't after about fifteen minutes of too much narration it was hard to watch. The narrator had that deep egyptian "The Mummy" voice but spoke way too often, so much so that it overshadowed the acting.

I pray that God is glorified through this project and many people are made aware of His power and majesty! Blessings on Mr. Burnett and Ms. Downey! Thank you for making this project.

The movie is awful! Misleading and inaccurate at most every turn. No suprise.

Like all movies, the "BOOK" is always better!

The Bible – no thanks! Marshall Arts and other typical Holywood crap made me turn it off after only 40 minutes and go to sleep.

This was a Biblical joke! If one reads and understand it, you cannot accept this movie. We do not have liberty to rewrite the Word, not even in a movie format. This is how come many are lost today, speak where the Bible speak, and be silence where it doesn't. The Bible is a complete package, not a cliff note of salvation. Two thumbs down!

The good book does not not need to be re-written in order to make it more "dramatic". The Bible and the word of God stands on its own merit and should NEVER be tampered with to appease a producer or directors wishes. I was somewhat disappointed in the first segment and hope that the remaining segments of the series stay true to scripture.

It was so bad it wasn't even "funny" bad. Lots of swordfights thrown in and the dirt on everbodies faces was so obviously brushed on it looked like a high school production. I also loved how some Isrealites had British accents and some didn't. Lol. This is exactly the kind of lowest common denominator tripe that the History channel is now know for.

I was disappointed with this watered down version of the Bible. If you can't fit the entire Bible in a series with biblical truths, then don't bother doing it. Anything to make a buck nowadays!

The Ninjas. When the Angelic Ninjas showed up pretty much was a fail. Not to mention all of the other things. Like the middle aged abraham. Isaac knowing that his father was going to kill him. It kind of took away from the message. I think that it was so unbelievable those parts that the directors try to make it believable in our today world which results in the fail.

Noah's ARC? Is the journalist confusing Noah's craft with the rainbow? lol I was excited that this series was coming to TV, but disappointed with this first installment. I expected it to be condensed, since it would be years long instead of hours if it weren't, and I, too, was a little disturbed by the depiction of the angels as ninjas, along with the description of the "angel of death" passing over the homes of the Jews rather than the "angel of the Lord", among other things. My main concern so far, however, is that I didn't see the deep faith of Abraham and Moses, or the explanation for why God allowed the Israelites to be enslaved for 400 yrs, and in the story of Moses, the fact that the explanation for why King Herod ordered all the baby boys killed was inaccurate (actually because he was attempting to destroy the baby Jesus). I appreciate that the producers want to educate Americans about the Bible, and I applaud their desire-however, the ENTIRE Bible in one mini-series is pretty much impossible to do with accuracy and attention to the important relationships and details. My hope is that this series will make people seek more knowledge of the Bible and its true contents, and that Hollywood will notice that there is interest and a NEED for this kind of programming/film.

Why some people is just negative about everything ! I just love the fact that someone is making a movie about our Bible and hopefully people will start readying and understanding the Bible . Even if it starts out of curiosity

Excellent viewing and I give the History Channel a big shout out for putting something decent on TV to offset the junk that other channels are putting out. Of course, one would have to be a believer to appreciate the value of good, clean television programming. Thank you Roma Downey, Mike Burnett and the History Channel. Blessings to you all.

Too bad they're putting a Hollywood twist on thing like the bible – ugghhh!

C'mon Randy Walden he is just trying to Jazz it up a little to make interesting. Kinda like those people who think having a band in church is a good idea. I'm offended by both.

I did not know that Sampson was black, and married a white woman. I also didn't know that his hair was actually cut by a woman, while he was sleeping. I thought in the Bible, his head was actually shaved. The Bible mini-series, would be much better told, true to the actual happenings in the Bible. I will continue watching this, but at the same time, I will take what I see with a grain of salt ~ realizing a lot of it may not be true. Very disappointing to me, too! If you're going to tell THE STORY, please, keep it honest and real. But mostly, keep it true!

And I know this is all about being politically correct. What about being BIBLICALLY correct? Is PC more important? NO, it's NOT.

I take exception to some of their "creative license" as well. Sampson was NOT black, he was HEBREW, as were ALL of the Judges of Israel.

Still not a bad production. And, if it opens the door to discussion with a non-believer that may help them to believe, then it is a good thing.

Mar 14, 2013
I agree, Tracy – about the discussion part. And while I do take exception to the black Sampson, I do think the actor who portrayed him, did a great job and looked the part of a strong man. I liked the actor.
Mar 14, 2013
And another thing I'd like to know the REAL answer to (since The Bible is not exactly being TRUE)………..is, was Sampson's wife white? In The Bible, they killed her, because she was married to a black man. So, now I am left to wonder, is that part true? Did it happen? Was she killed because she married a black man? See, that is what BOTHERS ME! They weve some UNtruth in, and in doing so, bring forth even more questions about what really happened, AS WELL AS confuse people!
Mar 15, 2013
I will research your question and give you an answer tomorrow if possible. Please remind me as I have a lot going on in my head. Delilah was an Arab (philistine) if memory serves me right.
Mar 15, 2013
Tracy, I was thinking that might be the case, but was not sure. I do love the series and will keep watching it; but I just wish they had done it a little differently.
Mar 15, 2013
And if they had all been black in the Bible, and they used a white actor to portray Sampson, I would be asking the same question: Why did they use a white guy. It's not that he was black, it's more that they did NOT follow the true Biblical story of his color.
