‘The Onion’ Calls 9-Year-Old Quvenzhané Wallis The ‘C-Word’ On Twitter

The Onion is known for its satirical — and often controversial — articles and comments, but one tweet may have gone too far, even for the snarky news organization.

During the Oscars Sunday evening, The Onion tweeted, “Everyone else seems afraid to say it, but that Quvenzhané Wallis is kind of a c**t, right? #Oscars2013″

Twitter exploded, for the most part, at the audacity of The Onion for calling a 9-year-old what many consider to be the worst word you can say to a female. However, some condoned the tweet, arguing that “this is what they do.” The tweet received over 500 retweets and favorites.

“We all understand satire, being snarky and funny, but @TheOnion should apologize immediately for saying such a thing about a 9-year-old girl,” journalist and author Roland Martin tweeted.

Patrice Yursik, creator of Afrobella.com, tweeted, “I say this as a fan of @TheOnion who has bought the books & reads the site all the time. That wasn’t funny. At all. Apologize while you can.”

Other Twitter users commented that the website crossed a line and that whoever posted the tweet should be fired.

“Dear @TheOnion Please fire the person/people who thought it was cool to call Quvenzhané Wallis such a despicable, disrespectful word. Now,”Liz Dwyer of LosAngelista.com wrote.

“I hope whomever at @TheOnion sent that tweet gets exactly what they deserve. From both the law and the street,” user Dustin Ross tweeted.

The Onion eventually deleted the tweet, but not before outraged users grabbed a screenshot of the offensive post. At the time of this writing, the website had yet to address the tweet.
