Bartender Fired For Reporting Drunk Driver To Police

Twyla DeVito, an Ohio bartender, was shockingly fired after reporting a drunk driver to police.

Devito thought she was doing the honorable thing when she called police during her shift as a bartender at the American Legion Post in Shelby, Ohio. However, her employers disagreed and she was allegedly fired for her goodwill efforts.

WDRB News writes that during one of Devito’s shifts, she became concerned about a regular customer who she considered to be highly intoxicated. She decided to inform local police in an effort to prevent the gentlemen from driving drunk.

According to Shelby Police Chief Charlie Roub, the customer was found to be driving with a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit. He applauds Devito’s decision to alert authorities.

However, the bartender’s employers reportedly did not share the sentiment. Just days following the incident, Devito was let go from her position at the Legion Post. She explains her shock:

“They do a lot of good for this community, for our veterans. I came into work, he was already there, pretty much hammered. He ordered a beer, I gave it to him, and then I started to try to slow it down, serving him.”

She continued:

“I called the police and said we have a very drunk person leaving the bar. He is going to kill someone or himself.”

An article by 10TV News writes that Mic Hubbard, a commander of the post, believes DeVito made the correct decision morally, he disagrees with her actions on a business level.

He explained:

“If every patron who comes in here has to worry about the cops waiting for them when they leave, the place would be empty.”

Do you think a bartender should be fired for reporting drunk drivers to police, even if it might affect business?

  1. This is another reason why this veteran has always thrown invitations to join the American Legion in the trash. My father joined after World War II and quit in disgust. I hope she takes them to the cleaners.

This is outrageous, I will no longer display any legion material. This Lady saved a bundle of payments by the Post if anyone were KILLED or seriously INJURED. Cdr. Stupid "Think, Drink with responsibility".

She has a lawsuit. If she served him and he hurt someone she would have been named. She will win. Very stupid decision by management.

Please don't take the actions of this one post as a reflection of the American Legion organization. The American Legion is in desperate need of younger membership to help it survive. The legion not only supports veterans but also supports children and has other programs it is active in. Things like the Special Olympics, the wounded warrior project, and may more. The only way to renew the American Legion is if younger members join. I am 43 years old, and have been an American Legion member for 15 years. I can tell you that the actions of this single post do not reflect the American Legion as a whole.

Shame on management! Who the hell fires an employee for calling a cop on a drunk that wants to be on the road. She should've been praised! Instead they wanted bad publicity. Boycott the bar and it will be empty for sure.

  7. She should have called him a taxi, NOT the Police. She was probably scared because she was the last person to serve him thereby making here personally liable. It was an attempt

  8. An attempt to cover here ass not save lives, next time

  9. Try observing the situation and using better judgement, not backpedaling and calling the police to get out of trouble, shame on you miss

She knew he was already "hammered" …why did you give him another drink sweetheart? How about…oh I dunno…calling him a CAB?

There are no cab services in the town and nobody wanted to volunteer to drive the guy home.
