Florida’s New Business Logo Called Sexist By Critics

Florida New Logo For Business

The new Florida business logo is being called sexist by some critics. The logo was unveiled on Thursday and, instead of promoting the state’s economic development, it has caused a gender debate.

Enterprise Florida’s new logo consists of the word “FLORIDA” written in green letters. The “I” is represented with an orange necktie. The tag line is, “The Perfect Climate For Business.”

Fox News reports that some of the logo’s critics include women business leaders, who allege that the logo is sexist, because most women don’t wear a necktie.

Pamela Rogan, the President of the Central Florida Chapter of NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) stated of the new Florida logo:

“I thought immediately that it set us back, all the work that we’ve done. It’s not that they have to make it pink or ‘girlie,’ but maybe put a briefcase or something like and iPhone or a smartphone in there to represent business.”

Rogan added, “There are a lot of other icons I think can better represent business.” The Sun-Sentinel notes that Stuart Doyle, a spokesman for Enterprise Florida, stated that the tie in the new logo is a “universal symbol of business.”

He added that the new brand was vetted by On Ideas, a creative agency based in Jacksonville. The agency had discussions with 25 women chief marketing officers before it was unveiled. The logo was presented to the Enterprise Florida board before it was released to the public.

Do you think Enterprise Florida’s new logo is sexist?

I bet you could transform the "A" in Florida into a boxy pants suit.

  2. Anonymous February 5th, 2013

women belong in the kitchen anyway.

  3. Joseph M Labeck Jr February 5th, 2013

I think the whole issue is silly. I do know, and have known, women who wear ties. I don't see it as sexist at all, and people who make that assumption are just being hypersensitive.

  4. Rory McCarthy February 5th, 2013

The agency had discussions with 25 Women Chief Marketing Officers? Yea, right. How many of those women were wearing ties?

  5. Ja Doe February 5th, 2013

It doesn't matter that most Americans will find this "scandal" as anything but silly, the radical feminists, liberals and state run media will turn this into a massive "war against women" campaign…and as long as the 47% (and a few extra) are getting their "free" stuff, they'll jump on board with them in "support". THAT is how a propaganda campaign works.

  6. Toby Denniston February 5th, 2013

How would you incorporate an IPhone or a briefcase – this is just stupid! These activist are making fools of themselves!

  7. Chuck Butler February 5th, 2013

If people spend more time creating businesses and less time looking for silly thing to bitch about a lot more would get done.

  8. Justin Mccafferty February 5th, 2013

sounds like women should wear more neck ties to me.

  9. Steve Blum February 5th, 2013

You can't do anything without offending someone. It's not news… Don't like the logo? Tough sh*t.

  10. Ron Jakubisyn February 5th, 2013

More importantly…who the hell wears a tie in Florida? It's hot.

  11. Deborah Bogan February 5th, 2013

Personally I don't really care. But if you think you don't care, maybe we should see whether there are more female business owners or male, if the woman lead then the tie could be pink. Haha. Every year the tie changes colors to the leading sex. And yes even if some women wear ties :/ or smoke cigars, those are still traditionally male things. Some men wear dresses but I'm sure if the A were a dress, most people would think it implies Florida is a place for women to business., and since its a tie, it implies that Florida is a place for men to do business

  12. Matt Gilbride February 5th, 2013

Sexist? Isn't there a lot other things to worry about than using a tie as a business logo? Use an iPhone…that's a smart idea to use it and violate copyright issues or it might be outdated technology in a few years…awesome suggestion. Would the complainers feel better if they use the "A" with the same picture to identify a public restroom? Nevermind, that's a crappy idea. Maybe turn the "O" into a doughnut to represent meetings or the workers that come in late. Maybe the gripers can use a suggestion form, I think it's a ID-10T Form.

  13. Chris Barton February 5th, 2013

set them back? It's not like Florida's logo is taking away their jobs or limiting roles/promotions to males only.. the tie is equated with business due to most jobs are tech or corporate now and suits/business attire are worn by men AND women.. many women wear ties and to undermined them because your saying that women don't wear ties is ignorant. If I see a tie or a suit I immediately think business since most teenagers have smartphones and ipads now.

  14. Henry A Avellaneda-Parrado February 5th, 2013

They should have used a gender neutral symbol! How would people feel if instead of a tie it was a skirt? If they are trying to project a fair and progressive organization were there is no sex bias, then the should change their logo!

  15. Mikhail Bazhenov February 6th, 2013

I have worked with several executives and neared an executive position and the only time I ever saw a businesswoman wearing a skirt was my girlfriend who I used to nail at work. Other than that women do wear ties for business.

  16. Arturo A. Ramirez February 6th, 2013

Oh my goodness, we really have people always waiting to be offended.

  17. Henry A Avellaneda-Parrado February 6th, 2013

Then..let's jus put a skirt! LOL!

  18. Anonymous February 6th, 2013

I'm a business woman and in no way whatsoever does this logo insult me or belittle me as a woman. Shame on them for calling this "sexist." A tie is one of the universal symbols for business-people and it works perfectly with this logo.

  19. Soalric Holt Parker February 6th, 2013

Simple. Women, start wearing ties. Okay, problem solved!

  20. Cam Matheis February 6th, 2013

I don't think it is sexist, it's just kinda boring. Anyways we survived the old FLORIDA…SEE IT LIKE A NATIVE campaign years ago. But I do agree, who the hell wears a tie in Florida?

  21. Anna Burns Donaldson February 6th, 2013

Really? Seriously? Everything is in the traditional colours Florida uses yet some wise-acre wants to say it's sexist because of a tie? Really? If you're offended by a tie, you need to stay home. End of story, because your PC bull crap is ridiculous. And no one will like you, which would offend you more, and you would probably try to blame it on some other deeply ingrained insecurity that the PC police would love to exploit. That said, I didn't get the impression that they were aiming towards a certain gender (probably because I wasn't over thinking things). What I saw was the traditional Florida colours and an item often associated with being a corporate business… Again, go home pretentious P.C.-ers.

  22. Deborah Bogan February 6th, 2013

    Pink tie I say. Haha

  23. Jordan Holle February 6th, 2013

OK first not talking about everyone! We clear, ok I think if your black, Hispanic, fat, or a woman your always going to be offended on something. Seriously this is what America has come to bitching over a tie Wow!

  24. Jimmy Nicholson February 6th, 2013

    People need to lighten up.

  25. Donald W. Grab February 6th, 2013

everything today is either racist or sexist. we didn't have this silly crap before the modern woman joined the work force and blacks and browns need to return to there native ancestory.

  26. Nate Costa February 6th, 2013

women wear ties guys dont wear skirts

  27. Matt Gochnaur February 6th, 2013

Have you all looked at the license plates? It looks like beans and sausage…

  28. Stephen Rindfleisch February 6th, 2013

The logo is just fine. In fact, the only way that I could ever see this emblem as "sexist", is if I were looking for an excuse to blow that whistle. If people are going to get their panties in a knot because a tie was used for a business logo then submit a better idea, cause an iPhone or suitcase just isn't going to work there. Now if say the "L" was a female Secretary, then I could see sexist.

  29. Adela Bello-Abela February 7th, 2013

Can we please, please concentrate on the economy, people are out of work and benefits for their families. It's just a logo…. everyone knows men and women both work in all of the 50 states. Let us use our time, talents, and resources wisely and work together to improve salaries and working conditions here in Florida.

  30. Henry A Avellaneda-Parrado February 7th, 2013

    wrong! some guys wear skirts!

  31. Justin R Groth February 7th, 2013

That's funny. Really? We are worried a "TIE" is sexist. Every woman executive I have ever met wore a tie. Not to many wore a skirt. This was a lame way to add a little business flare to the poster please quite complaining. Complaining about this is like people sueing McDonald's because they gained weight. Sure enough people will agree with you to get attention and maybe even your way in this but its not worth it, I promise you.

  32. Justin R Groth February 7th, 2013

I would like to point out I have not met many female execs, or many execs at all.

  33. Justin R Groth February 7th, 2013

I would like to point out I have not met many female execs, or many execs at all.

  34. Michael Lamb February 7th, 2013

This is so ridiculous! It fit right in with the spelling of Florida. People grow up. Political correct, raciest, sexist. How stupid are we going to get before we grow up? What would you rather see feminist?, A female leg?
