Girl, 6, Crashes Car While Trying To Drive To See Her Father

A 6-year-old girl crashed her mother’s car when she decided to make a cross-town visit to see her father.

The incident happened early Sunday morning in Pittsburgh. Police didn’t release the name of the 6-year-old girl who crashed the car, but said the incident happened while her mother was sleeping, The Associated Press reported. The girl apparently wanted to go see her father, who was across town at the time.

The girl didn’t make it car, crashing the car into two parked cars, forcing one of those cars to hit a third, before hitting a utility pole and crashing to a stop.

Police said the girl was tall for her age so she was able to operate the car, but still don’t know how she figured it out.

“How she knew how to operate a car, your guess is as good as mine,” said police Sgt. Jerry Parker. Police added that they’re not sure if anyone will face charges in the incident.

It appears to be something about southwestern Pennsylvania that makes adolescents want to crash a car. Back in 2011, a 5-year-old crashed a car in a busy partking lot, although as The Associated Press noted, it wasn’t exactly the kid’s fault. The girl’s aunt put her in the driver’s seat to back out of a tight parking spot. Two cars were wrecked in the process.

At least some good came out of the most recent instance when a 6-year-old girl crashes her car — her father got called in to pick her up, so she was able to see him after all.

Why is it so difficult to imagine that a six-year-old would know how to operate a car? I knew how to drive one from the time I can remember – a key turns it on, one pedal to make it go, on pedal to make it stop and a wheel to steer it. Any six-year-old who's been observing mom and/or dad all her life would have to be functionally retarded NOT to understand.

I knew all of that for years but it wasn't until later in my teen years, before I had my license, that I knew you had to hold onto the brakes to get out of park.

My great grandson started working on demolition derby cars almost before he could walk. He is now 10 years old and I would bet that he could tear down an engine and put it back together. When he was about 4, he backed his dads' truck out of the driveway and across the street. These kids are smarter than lots of people give them credit for, let me tell you.

  13. I guess they meant "she didn't drive 'far'"…And I think most 6 year olds can figure out how to drive one!

  14. Apparently she didn't know how to operate a car or she wouldn't have crashed she would have driven to her Dad's house.

This would have never happened had we BANNED CARS LIKE I SAID SO. Cars kill over 35,000 people every year! BAN ALL CARS IN THE USA, WE NEED A SAFER COUNTRY! BAN ALL CARS!

  21. It's obvious that this article was also written by a 6 year old. Reading it was even worse than experiencing a car crash!

The editor of this article should be fired for all the grammar errors he or she missed, and the reporting author should be fired for stereotyping all of southwestern PA adolesents as wanna-be car crashers, "It appears to be something about southwestern Pennsylvania that makes adolescents want to crash a car." There was only one other incident like this one two years ago. Who hires these idiots?

Must be the editior's day off. This was terribly written. How far did she make it?

  33. This story brings back childhood memories. Many years ago (1970's) my Dad left me in the car in the hospital parking lot. He was running in to give my Mom something…I got behind the wheel and was "playing", next thing I knew the car was rolling backwards and suddenly stopped. Recall the older cars when you didn't need a key to shift?

Must have been the editor's day off. This was terribly written. How far did she make it? Couldn't have been too far. Seeing over the dash board and hitting the pedals at the same time would have been difficult.

  35. When I was 3 years I would drive my mothers station wagon to the bar to pick up my father every Friday night. Mom could not get him because she had to many DUI'S. So she did not drive at night.

the amazing part is no one is responsible for the damage this child caused, thankfully the child is safe, but where is mom? if the same child hit the street walking to her dad, mom would have been charged with neglect. so does this mean small children should just steal cars, what's next, pack a gun and kill daddy?

really? "use spell check"? spell check finds words spelled incorrectly. it doesn't find grammatical errors or spot when the wrong word is used. spell check didn't see anything wrong with "The girl didn’t make it car" because every one of those words is spelled right. not even a grammar checker would have caught it. the only thing that would is a proofreader. and proofreading is obviously a lot art anymore.

What's ironic is that the girl did a better job driving than the author did writing this story.
At least the damage from HER accident can be repaired, and she can be taught someday to drive correctly and safely. Same can't be said for the writer. Maybe he needs to be given a WUI test for Writing Under the Influence.

  64. Glad I'm not the only one too distracted by the glaring spelling and vocabulary errors to have really focused on the content of this story? She "didn't make it car?" "Partking lot?" 5 & 6 year olds are adolescents? This must be one of those outsourced-written stories. Also, 6 year olds probably shouldn't drive.

It shouldn't be hard to figure out how she operated the car. People don't realize how smart kids are and how much they watch/listen to us. Once, my two year old brother found my mom's keys and opened the car, got into the driver's seat and while STANDING UP, pulled the E-brake release, put the keys in, started the car, put it in reverse and backed out the the driveway. Thankfully no cars were coming but he got to the other side of the street! And he never once touched any of the pedals. All of the sudden, I see out the window and yelled, "Mom! Paul's driving the car!" I was 6. When we asked him how he knew to do that, he said,'i watched Mommy do it." 2 years old people. Don't underestimate your kids. :) When they want something, they'll do anything to get it. Only in this case, instead of throwing a fit, she drove a car. :)

My brother crashed a car at 18 months old. He was standing in the driver's seat playing with the steering wheel when he grabbed the shifter and it went into reverse. It rolled down a slight incline into a ditch across the road knocking the open passenger door off as it clipped my aunt's parked car.

Um…didn't you read the article?? lol

  79. That was the first snafu… I am wondering, who the bleep wrote this? My guess was he meant that the girl didn't get far… but hey, far, car… the obvious lack of proofreading but did manage to grammar-proof it. So here are a couple of my fav parts.

<<How she knew how to operate a car, your guess is as good as mine,” said police Sgt. >>> This whole sentence just feels wrong. Would someone actually speak like that?? Hmmm, I don't know.

    OK Bloopers 2 and 3

<<Back in 2011, a 5-year-old crashed a car in a busy partking lot,>> a partking lot. Damn this one didn't make it through my spell check. Maybe the author was color blind… or perhaps, just failed to read it?

Blooper 3, ok you can't really call it a blooper but a botch, on the last paragraph, he took quite the stretch to connect these two things together… the final paragraphs where he writer, hey, it's all good.

<< something about southwestern Pennsylvania that makes adolescents want to crash a car>>

Yea, it must be the water, Or aliens? But truth be told, it wounds suspect to me… LOL… kidding. This was a hard article to read and an even tougher article to swallow… without gagging between my laughter and my tears! I guess I should be thanking you for the comic relief!
