Dan Radcliffe’s Gay Love Scene Creates Buzz, Potter Star Wonders Why

Daniel Radcliffe’s gay love scene in the upcoming beat poet inspired Kill Your Darlings is not the first time the actor has stepped far away from his role in what is likely the largest children’s film franchise in recent memory. Soon after he came of age, the Harry Potter star literally bared all on stage in Equus.

But Radcliffe’s gay love scene in the film, in which he takes on the role of late, gay beat poet Allan Ginsburg, has still piqued audiences who largely associate the star with his family-friendly fare.

As we reported earlier, Kill Your Darlings has screened at Sundance to positive reception, and Radcliffe’s gay love scene seems to be the main buzz among moviegoers as the young star makes a post-Potter name for himself.

Dan was quoted in an earlier post as describing the explicit sex scenes as being over with quickly, and remarked:

“It was something new … But you know what, we shot that whole scene in maybe an hour and a half so it was incredibly fast-paced. I didn’t really have time to stop to think and worry about it.”

But interviewers are fascinated with the idea of Radcliffe in a gay love scene — clearly, none of them Harry Potter fanfic buffs — and the star tells MTV that he is perplexed that in 2013, a gay sex depiction in film is so captivating.

Radcliffe, who is straight but a long-time ally to the gay community, says:

“It’s interesting that it’s deemed shocking. For me, there’s something very strange about that because we see straight sex scenes all the time. We’ve seen gay sex scenes before. I don’t know why a gay sex scene should be any more shocking than a straight sex scene. Or both of them are equally un-shocking.”

You can catch Radcliffe’s gay love scene debut when Kill Your Darlings hits theaters later this year.
