Millions Of Americans Believe World Will End On December 21, 2012

NASA, the White House and several other organizations have released statements reassuring the American public that the world will not end on December 21, 2012. Still, a new poll shows that more than 2% of the population believes that the apocalypse will occur next Friday.

Two percent of the population may sound like a small number but its more than 6 million people.

The Public Religion Research Institute surveyed 1,000 Americans and found that 2% of the population believes that the world will end on December 21, 2012.

And American’s aren’t the only ones fearing the apocalypse. People in China, France and Russia are also preparing for the end of the world.

So why do these people believes that the world is about to end? Well, according to the survey, the weather plays a big part in the belief. The survey found that more than one third of Americans believe that recent natural disasters like Hurricane Sandy are evidence that we are living in the end of times.

By contrast, more than 60% of American believe that the severity of recent natural disasters is evidence of global warming.

Do you think that the world will end next week? Here’s a video from NASA explaining why the world will not end on December 21, 2012.

Two percent of the population may be a little disappointed when they wake up on December 22 but don’t worry, there’s still hope to see the apocalypse in your lifetime. According to the survey, 15% of the population believes that the end of the world, as predicted by Revelations, will occur in their lifetime.

Here are some more interesting findings from the survey.

  • College graduates are four times less likely to believe that the world will end in their lifetime.
  • More than 25% of white evangelical Protestants and minority Christians believe that the apocalypse  as told in Revelation, will occur in their lifetime.
  • Less than 10% of Catholics, white mainline Protestants and religiously unaffiliated Americans believe that the world will end in their lifetime.

What do you think? Is the world going to end on December 21, 2012?
