Woman Has Baby At New York Zoo: Delivered By Staff

New York — When a woman went into labor at the Rosamund Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, New York,  a quick acting employee at the zoo delivered the baby.

On Friday, a 21-year-old heavily pregnant woman who was visiting the zoo with a group of friends that included children, suddenly went into contractions.

Zoo Education Coordinator, Liz Schmidt, told The Post-Standard that an emergency call came through on her radio while she was teaching a group of five-year-old’s and their parents about reindeer.

She was told that a woman was in labor about 500 yards away on the wildlife path near the bear exhibit.

“I honestly didn’t expect her to deliver at the zoo,” Ms Schmidt said. “I thought we’d pop her in a wheelchair and she’d be good to go to the hospital.”

When she arrived at the scene, an adult took the children in the group away while Ms Schmidt radioed out for back up and blanket and assessed the situation.

From there, reportedly, the birth progressed rapidly.

“As I came on the scene, the baby was pretty much on its way out,” said Zookeeper Sarah Kohler, who responded to Ms Schmidt’s back up request.

After the little girl was born, members of the woman’s party and zoo staff kept the mother and baby warm with clothing and blankets. An ambulance arrived shortly afterwards to take the pair to the local Crouse Hospital.

Zoo Director Ted Fox later told reporters he was proud of the way his staff had responded and that they planned on sending a gift to the family.

That was really kinda rude! Not everyone who is pregnant is going to sit at home and do nothing at all most people are still going out and enjoying their live it wasn't like she was at a bar and went into labor. She went to the zoo nothing wrong with that and now she has a very interesting story to tell her child when the gets older.

    Awwwww cute story!

  10. Call the baby zooie.

  11. Pregnancy doesn't cripple you! Have some common sense!

  12. Not everyone is lazy when they are pregnant. And it sounds as if it was a pretty quick labor. Your not too bright to assume that someone is a bad parent, just by reading an article about giving birth. LOL

@Teresa–I'm sorry, do you know this woman personally? Because if not, that comment was really rude and ignorant.

just because you are pregnant doesnt mean you sit at home all day….in fact doctors advise you to walk around and that during pregnancy and even while in labor because it helps things move better, plus how was she to know she was gonna go into labor?

While I agree Teresa, there, is an "idiot" on this matter . . . so far everyone has misused the word "you're".

I mean if you're going to call someone an "idiot" just tell them "You're an idiot!" Otherwise, you look just as foolish, and ignorant!

*Rule of thumb, if you can say "You are an idiot." then it's 'you're' not 'your'. Or if you can say "You are not too bright." then it should be "You're not too bright." instead of ". . . your not too bright. . . "*

  19. Why the hell are people making this a big deal? She wanting to labor had her baby at the zoo so what? everyone acts like she went into labor in a fucking meth lab or something! She was out having fun enjoying her life! she went into labor and had her baby! doctor recumened going out and doing things when you are prego, its heathyer for you and your baby, make the pregnancy less stress full and the labor easier!

Thank you for the English lesson Stephanie! Now, allow me to teach you a lesson in manners, something you and Teresa both don't seem to have, if you do not have anything good to say, say nothing at all :)

  21. ♫ Someone told me it's all happening at the zoo. I do believe it. I do believe it's true! ♫

Lucky lady to A. Have such a FAST quick labor, 2 save all that money on medical bills, 3 have an amazing story to tell baby every night at bedtime, and 4 probably free zoo passes for LIFE!

  25. Heck i was out on a Polaris side by side 6×6 the week before i had my son.I mean i wasn't doing anything stupid just crusing around with the kids.

  26. Vicky, I cannot tell you how untrue that statement is. Everyone is different when it comes to pregnancy. To think that this young lady is "stupid" for being at a zoo during her pregnancy is ridiculous. Do you know how many weeks she was? NO, the story does not state this fact. Some people like to be active during their pregnancy, as did I through all of mine and I did not have quick labors at all. Bless this womans heart for making a wonderful blessing, regardless where she gave birth!!
