Phil Robertson Explains Why He Turned Down NFL For ‘Duck Dynasty’

Phil Robertson Duck Dynasty

Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson had the chance to play in the National Football League (NFL) but instead chose to hunt for ducks, a career choice that has made him rich and famous.

Speaking to  Billy Bush and Kit Hoover on Monday’s Access Hollywood Live Robertson said of his potential NFL career:

“I had some offers.”

Robertson then explained that he doesn’t regret his decision after recently running into former college teammate Terry Bradshaw:

“I ran into my old buddy Bradshaw, for the first time since the locker room back at Louisiana Tech. I ran into him at the LA airport. I said, ‘Bradshaw, you’ve done well, my man.’ And then he started telling me about how many injuries he received.”

It turns out that Robertson made his decision to skip the NFL because of duck season:

“They said, ‘Why don’t you go in the NFL and play football?’ In the ‘60s, the late ‘60s, the going price was $60,000. You make the team? 60 grand. I thought, ‘And I miss duck season? And I have large, violent… men chasing me trying to stomp me in the dirt?’ It just seemed like a lot of stress and not a lot of money.”

While making a career out of hunting ducks might have seemed like a big gamble it has paid off with millions of dollars in earnings and the respect of his duck hunting counterparts.

If you’re a fan of Phil Robertson Duck Dynasty returned to A&E on Wednesday night at 10/9 PM Central.

I want to be a part of that family. I adore Miss Kay, have a crush on Phil (respectfully of course Miss Kay) and think Jase is a adorable. I love the interaction and the respect each family member has for each other. Love, love, love. If Phil and Jase ran a summer camp for children (hint hint) I wouldn't be able to pull my 12 year old son away.

  12. Oh ya he would make things happy happy happy him and his family is what america is all about

  13. Smart move. They need a lot more TV Shows with kind, moral lessons. It is good the way Phill explains the facts of llife to His GrandKids.

  14. I like how there are no "bleeps" at all on this show — and they all eat and pray together! YES! I LOVE THEM ALL!

  15. They did have a lot of shows with moral lessons in the 90's. About every t.v. show there was a moral lesson in the show and they all got cheesy sorta like this show. However I do like the show just wish they would of kept it more believable

  16. Happy happy happy.

  17. Phils the man. I would cast my vote for him.

I have heard a few bleeps. They are still human and subject to slips. What I like is the way they play the ignorant redneck. If you listen, things slip out that show there is more than meets the eye with them. They may be rednecks, but I wouldnt count them out in the smarts department :)

  27. I love Duck Dynasty! The show is entertaining! The people are good ole Southern folks that enjoy their family and life, and love the LORD! They make me Happy, Happy, Happy! God bless 'em all!

  28. I love the show I love how there is no foul language and I love how there is no profanity I think it is the best show on tv and I watch it all the time!!!

  29. I really, really like the family unity and love they have for each other. I would love to spend a day with them all and stay for Ms. Kay's dinner.

I read in one of Sadie or John Luke's interviews (can't remember which one) that the network put in bleeps to make it "seem" as if Korie, for instance, used profanity… when she didn't. Phil called up the producers at A&E and threw a fit after they aired it, so there probably won't be anymore bleeps.

  32. Great person……..

  33. Aaron is his name if I remember correctly and he is a pastor and chooses not to be on the show. He may have recently left the church to work within the company but I haven't verified that so it is only speculation.
